This is another year that Valentine's Day falls on Ash Wednesday. A real reminder of the sacrificial love of all the Saint Valentines. (See also my other blog for some Valentine's thoughts)

A Mighty Fortress
October 31st is Reformation Day for Lutherans*. In honor of this, here is the best known hymn by Martin Luther for you to read as a poem. It is based on Psalm 46 and was written around 1529. Some people think Luther wrote it in remembrance of his friend Leonhard Kaiser, who was martyred due to the Reformation.
The translation from German included here is closer to the original German, a little less like the modern hymn. It is based somewhat on literal translations and somewhat on the known translations, with adaptations by this blogger.
The picture included is the Luther's Rose**, designed by him. It is rich in symbolism.
1) A mighty Fortress is our God,
A good Defense and Weapon.
He helps us free from every need.
That has us now o'ertaken.
The old evil enemy
Works still more earnestly.
His pow'r and ploys are great;
His armor is cruel hate:
On earth is not his likeness.
2) With our own strength is nothing done,
Else quick our loss effected.
But for us fights the suitable One,
Whom God Himself elected.
You ask who is He who came?
Christ Jesus is His name,
Of heav'nly hosts the Lord,
God's only Son adored:
The battlefield He must hold.
3) Though all the world with devils were filled
All threat'ning to devour us,
We would not fear, for God has willed
They cannot overpow'r us.
The prince of worldly power,
Howe'er he might glower,
We will not be budged:
Since he's already judged,
One little word can bring him down.
4) The Word they still shall let remain
And not be thankful for it.
He is with us according to plan
With His good gifts and Spirit.
Were they to take our life,
Goods, honor, child and wife,
Let them go away.
They still will have no sway:
The Kingdom shall remain for us.
---Martin Luther, c. 1529; translation by various; adapted c.m.b., 2023
*Reformation Day, October 31st. Centuries before this, the Roman Catholic church had taken over the Druid observance of Samhain. The Druids believed the barrier between the worlds of dead and living was "thinnest" at midnight on October 31st. The Church repurposed November 1st as All Saints' Day. October 31st became known as "All Hallows' Eve" in English. Luther chose the day before All Saints Day, by tradition, to post his 95 Theses (statements) in German on a church door, calling for a debate among church leaders and scholars. These were translated and sparked the Protestant Reformation.
**Luther's Rose: this was first sketched by Luther around 1516 to 1520 and fully designed at the request of Johann Friedrich, Elector of Saxony. The black cross represents Jesus' sacrifice, the blackness symbolizing our sin. The red heart symbolizes our faith; Luther said that because of our sin, the heart ought to be black, yet, due to Christ, the heart is not utterly destroyed. The heart is on a white rose, to show that faith gives joy, comfort and peace: white is the color of angels and spirits. The sky blue field symbolizes joy and that faith is the beginning of future heavenly joy. The gold ring symbolizes precious eternity, which has no beginning and end.
This rendering has the triple phrase often used by Lutherans, sometimes written in Latin: sola fide, sola gratia, sola Scriptura. A fourth could be added: solus Christus, Christ alone.

What Child Is This*
1. What Child is this, who, laid to rest,
In Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherd guard and angels sing.
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
2. Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?**
Good Christian, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spears shall pierce Him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail, the Word made Flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh***
Come, peasant, king*** to own Him.
The King of Kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
Raise, raise the song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy, for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
--William Chatterton Dix, 1865
*usually sung to the English folk tune "Greensleeves"
**It's not known for sure what animals were present at Jesus' birth. The Luke 2 account says He was laid in a manger, so people assume He was born in a stable where other animals were present. Some people feel Mary rode a donkey down from Bethlehem to Nazareth, though the Bible doesn't say this either. Still, these animals make it into much of the religious art and into Nativity scenes.
***It seems the Magi (sometimes called "Wise Men") came later. They have sometimes been referred to as "kings", though they were not really rulers. [Psalm 72 has similar thoughts and refers to "kings", though.] This, as Christ's birth itself, shows the low & high of society worshipping HIm.

Ego Eimi
ἐγώ εἰμι
Jesus says:
"I AM the world's Light (John 8:12)
Who outshines eternal night."
"I AM the Good Shepherd (John 10:14)
And the door for the sheep: (John 10:7, 9)
The sheep hear My word
And within may safely sleep."
"I AM the Bread of Life; (John 6)
The Way, the Truth and the Life; (John 14:6)
The Resurrection and the Life." (John 11:25)
"I AM the True Vine
And you are the branches-- (John 15: 1,5)
Without what is Mine,
You do only what man does."

Paul answers for all of us:
"Christ Jesus came into the world for sinners,
First of whom am I." (I Timothy 1:15)

Moisture Comes to Arizona
Rain, Rain,
Came again,
Came to ease our climate's pain.
Cloud, Cloud,
You're no shroud;
You're a joy to have around.
Snow, Snow,
Do not go:
Beautify us here below.
"Cleanse me with hyssop,
And I shall be clean;
Wash me,
And I shall be whiter than snow." (Psalm 51:7)*
Grey, Grey,
Gone away:
Would you stay another day?
Sun, Sun,
Elsewhere fun,
Here you give our drought a run.
Rain, Rain,
Come again:
Leave us not with hopes in vain.
"'For just as the rain comes down
And snow from the heavens
And does not return there
Without watering the earth...
Thus is My Word
Which goes forth from my mouth:
It does not return to Me void.'" (from Isaiah 55:10-11)*
--C. Marie Byars, (c) 2021

The Golden Morning [Sun]
(apropos for Thanksgiving, though originally German)
Come ye with singing,
Our Maker bringing
Each good and blessing
We are possessing:
All be to God as an offering brought,
The best oblation
Our heart’s adoration.
Songs meet and thankful
Are incense and cattle
With which His pleasure most fitly is sought.
Evening and morning,
Sunset and dawning,
Wealth, peace, and gladness,
Comfort in sadness:
These are Thy works; all the glory be Thine!
Times without number,
Awake or in slumber,
Thine eye observes us,
From danger preserves us,
Causing Thy mercy upon us to shine.
Though all decayeth,
God ever stayeth,
The golden morning,
Joy her adorning,
On us is gleaming,
Rays brightly beaming,
With her beloved heart-quickening light.
My head and members
Lay deep in their slumbers,
But now awaking,
All sleep from me shaking,
Gazing on heav’n, I rejoice at the sight.
Joy her adorning,
On us is gleaming,
Rays brightly beaming,
With her beloved heart-quickening light.
My head and members
Lay deep in their slumbers,
But now awaking,
All sleep from me shaking,
Gazing on heav’n, I rejoice at the sight.
Mine eye’s beholding
God’s work unfolding,
Made for His glory,
Telling the story
Of all His power so mighty and great
And where the Father
His faithful shall gather
In peace, whenever
Earth’s ties they shall sever,
Leaving this mortal and perishing state.
God’s work unfolding,

Nor doth He waver,
He changeth never,
His Word and will have unchangeable ground.
His grace and favor
Are steadfast forever,
In our hearts healing
Death’s pangs that we’re feeling,
Keeping us now and eternally sound.
Father, O hear me,
Pardon and spare me;
Calm all my terrors,
Blot out mine errors
That by Thine eyes they may no more be scanned.
Order my goings,
Direct all my doings;
As it may please Thee,
Retain or release me;
All I commit to Thy fatherly hand.
The good and healthful,
The harmful, unhelpful,
Thou my Physician,
Who know’st my condition,
Hast ne’er more chastened than any should be.
Griefs, though heart-rending,
All have their ending;
Though seas be roaring
And winds outpouring,
Thereafter shines the dear sun’s blessèd face.
Fullness of pleasure
And glorious leisure
Then will be given
To me there in heaven,
Where all my thoughts are directing their gaze.

Field Trip
Texas Bluebonnets (related to western Lupines) |
"Man, born of woman,
is of few days, full of turmoil.
As a flower he springs forth
and fades away,
And as a fleeting shadow,
he does not last." (Job 14: 1-2)
They are in the morning
as new grass which springs up.
In the morning it springs and grows;
in the evening it withers and dries out. --Moses (Psalm 90:5b-6)
"A voice says, 'Cry out!'
And I said, 'What shall I cry?'
[God replies]:
'All flesh is green grass
And all its loveliness as the flower of the field...
The grass withers, the flower fades.
But the Word of God shall stand forever.' " (Isaiah 40:6, 8)

Making Known God's Glory
(an original translation of Psalm 19; verse numbering follows the Hebrew text)
(1) For the choir director. A song of David.
(2) The heavens are recounting
The glory of God*,
And their expanse makes conspicuous
The work of His hands.
(3) Day to day speech bubbles up,
And night to night knowledge is told.
(4) There is no speech nor are there words:
Their voice is not heard.
(5) [Yet] In the whole earth,
Their line has gone out,
To the end of the earth, their utterances**.
He has set up a tent for the Sun in them.
(6) And he [the Sun] is like a bridegroom
Coming out of his canopy;
He rejoices as a strong man
To run the course.

(7) From the end of the heavens
Is his going forth;
And his circuit is at the ends:
There is nothing hidden from his heat...
(8a) The Torah *** of Yahweh is perfect,
Turning back the soul...
(10b) The judgments of Yahweh are true,
They are altogether righteous...
(12) Also by them is Your servant warned;
In keeping them is great reward****...
(15) Let the words of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your Presence,
O, Yahweh, my Rock and my Redeemer.
*St. Paul speaks in Romans 1:19 how all creation reflects God's divine power
**Romans 10:18 quotes this to show how evangelists have taken God's Word out into the world.
***"Torah" is sometimes translated "Law", due to old Jewish use. It more properly means the entire collections of Moses, the Prophets, and the special writings; in other words, the Old Testament. (Not all of the O.T. is "Law"!!)
****"Great reward"; following the best path usually provides its own rewards in this life by keeping you out of trouble. The teachings in the Bible keep you connected to Christ, who actually gives the eternal reward.

Summer in Scripture
You set all the earth's bounds;
Summer and Winter---You made them. (Psalm 74:17)
[David confessed to God],
"For day and night was Your hand heavy upon me;
My juice* left in the droughts of summer.
I acknowledged my sin unto You,
And my iniquity I did not cover up.
I said, 'I will confess my transgressions unto Yahweh',
And You forgave the iniquities of my sin." (Ps. 32:4-5)

[God said to Noah after the Flood],
"Through all the days of the earth,
Neither Seedtime or Harvest,
Neither Cold or Heat,
Neither Summer or Winter,
Neither Day or Night
Shall take a 'sabbath-rest.'" (Genesis 8:22)
And the earth shall end,
And the seasons, too.
Heaven shall boast the best of each season
At every time, all the time.
And the blossoms of our confession and forgiveness
Will unfold fully and perfectly,
Where our perfect bodies will live in a perfected nature,
And the perfection of our love
At last reflects that of the Creator
And Savior who have always loved us.

Biblical Precipitation
Fire and hail, snow and clouds,
Storm winds doing His will...
Let them praise the Name of Yahweh,
For His Name alone is exalted;
His splendor is above the earth and heavens. [Psalm 148: 7a, 8, 13]
"God's voice thunders with marvelous things." [Young Elihu said.]
"He does great things we cannot know deeply.
For to the snow He says, 'Fall on the earth',
And to the rain shower, 'Be mighty torrents.'. . .
The animal goes into a lair
And settles down in its dens,
From the Breath of God is ice given, and the broad waters are frozen,
He also loads the cumulus clouds with moisture;
Clouds disperse His lightning..." [Job 37:5-6, 8-11]
He sends forth His command to the earth;
His word runs swiftly forth.
He dispenses snow as wool;
He scatters hoar-frost as ashes.
He hurls His hail as fragments---
Who can stand before His icy cold?
He sends forth His word and melts them;
He causes His wind to blow, and the waters flow. [Ps. 147;15-18]
"For just as the rain comes down," [says Yahweh]
"And the snow from the heavens,
And does not return there
Without watering the earth,
Causing it to sprout
So that it yields seed to the sower
And bread to the eater,
Thus is My Word which goes forth from My mouth:
It does not return void unto Me
But does what I have desired
And advances those things for which I sent it." [Isaiah 55:10-11]
